Recognizing pain in senior pets

Older pets rarely cry out — pain shows up as slowing down, hesitating at stairs, or sleeping in new spots. Learn the quiet signs to watch for.

Senior pets are experts at hiding discomfort. Instead of vocalizing, they change their habits: hesitating before jumping, taking stairs one at a time, grooming less, or withdrawing from the family.

Watch for changes in appetite, sleep location, and willingness to be touched. If you notice any of these shifts, a comfort-focused exam can identify the cause — and modern pain management can often restore much of your pet’s quality of life.
